Specialist Educators – Kylee Haar

Auslan at Brighton

Hello, my name is Kylee Haar. This is my 7th year at Brighton Primary teaching Auslan. I have a Cert IV qualification in Auslan which I completed at TAFE SA. This year I am looking at starting a diploma in Interpreting, at TAFE SA which runs for 18 months. I am continually seeking opportunities where I can further my understanding, knowledge and fluency by communicating with other Auslan users within the Deaf community.

Hearing Awareness Week commences on the 1st of March to the 7th, 2020. Hearing awareness day is Tuesday the 3rd of March 2020. This is an annual event to raise community awareness of hearing loss and ways to protect your hearing. During this week we will discuss how the ear works and preventative methods to protect your hearing.

Reception/Foundation – Students are becoming familiar with Auslan, including the introduction of letter recognition and basic vocabulary. Some cultural aspects of Auslan will be discussed.

Years 1-7 – Student focus will mainly consist of revision of the previous year’s learning with the introduction of new vocab and grammatical structure later in the term. This may be delivered through games, song, and discussion, affording all students opportunities to practice Auslan in different scenarios.

The curriculum will be built on the desires to communicate and interact particularly around topics that are familiar.

Specialist Choir (Singing) – Term 1

This term auditions will be held in the first few weeks of school for any interested students. Existing members will not need to reaudition. The Choir will then be practicing for the audition for the Festival of Music, which will be held early in term 2. Last year the Specialist Choir were successful with their audition which was a wonderful experience for all involved. Choir members will also be choosing and rehearsing a song for Harmony Day which will be later in term 1. Choir practice is held in the Auslan room on Monday and Wednesday during lunch. Additional practices will be required closer to performance dates.

Signing Choir

Signing Choir will be held on Wednesdays, lesson 6, in the Auslan room. All students are welcome to join the Signing Choir, however there will be a limit of 40 students. There will be additional lunch time practices closer to performances, in addition the choir members will need to practice at home. Last year the Signing Choir was successful with their audition for the Festival of Music, it was an amazing experience, and we will be auditioning again this year. I look forward to working with Rosanna and Giles, two of our BSSOs, who will be assisting me with our Signing Choir. It will be an exciting year having such a wealth of knowledge available, which will result in some very exciting performances throughout the year.

Acquaintance Night

If you have any questions and/or would like to see the Auslan room (located in the Library), I will be available on Acquaintance Night from 5:15 to 6:10pm or alternatively any morning before school and any afternoon after school. I will be on yard duty Tuesday mornings in the hall during Breakfast Club.
