MUSIC AT BRIGHTON PRIMARY SCHOOL

Hello, my name is Amanda Cheah and this will be my third year at Brighton Primary School teaching Music. I have a Bachelor of Music (performance jazz voice) and taught voice privately before obtaining my teaching masters. This year I aim to practice what I preach, I am learning a new instrument, the cello and joining a local ensemble! I also play ukulele in another local ensemble for fun. I am excited to undertake Anita Collin’s Bigger Better Brains Facilitator course in March this year and you should hear more about the latest research connecting music and brain development after that.

Elizabeth McDonald will be teaching Foundation students as well as some year 2 classes on Wednesdays out of the STEM room. Elizabeth is a very talented musician as well as a teacher based  at Reynella Primary School for the remainder of the week.

Music Count Us In is in term 4 this year and I hope to involve our whole school again. Watch our 2019 performance. https://blog.brightonps.sa.edu.au/2019/12/13/music-count-us-in-videos/

Term 1 week 10 “Just Add Music” will visit our school and perform two concerts for 3.1, 3.2, 3.3, 3.4, 3.5, Lib1, 1.3, 1.4, 1.5, 2.8, 2.10, 2.11, 4.3, 5.1, 5.2, 6.1, 6.2, 6.3, 6.4. Many of these band members were previously in well know group “Music is Fun”. They have offered us a special introductory price of $5.50 per child!

Term 2 Week 6 Wednesday 3rd June I have organised an excursion for 4.1, 4.5, 4.6 and our string students to the Adelaide Town Hall to see the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra and participate in a new work by Paul Rissman to accompany Sean Tan’s book “The Lost Thing”. The ticket to this event costs $12, but this does not include the cost of transport to The Town Hall (we are hoping to catch the train). Some of Sandy’s string students will also accompany us on this trip. Further details will be provided later.

Term 2 Week 9 Tuesday 23rd of June I have booked classes 2.7, 2.5, 2.9, 4.2 and 4.4 in for workshops with Jon Madin. He will come to us with his trailer full of weird and wacky instruments from Victoria. Lesson 6 (2:20pm) on the same day these classes will perform to each other as well as the year 1s and 2s. This will cost approximately $10 per child doing a workshop.

Primary Schools Music Festival held at the Adelaide Festival Theatre will be in weeks 7 and 8 of term 3. Festival of Music Choir/Senior Choir will be open to committed students in years 5, 6 and 7 and rehearsals will run in the music room on Thursday afternoons. We will commence in week 3 with an ‘administration’ meeting and have our first cluster rehearsal at Paringa Park on the 4th of March Wednesday -week 6, Term 1.

Junior Choir will run again this semester during Tuesday lunchtimes for students in years 3 and 4. This is voluntary for both students and myself, as it is during our break time. Consistent committed members will be invited to perform at Holdfast Mini Fest, held at Paringa Park Primary on Thursday 2nd of July- Week 10 of Term 2.

Ukulele club will be during lunch on Fridays in the music room for interested students in year 3 and up after they have done a minimum of 6 weeks of ukulele in class.

All Foundation, year 1 and year 2 students will participate in JP singing on a rotating roster on Thursday mornings.

Feel free to pay the music room a visit between 5:35 and 6:00pm on Acquaintance Night to be held on Tuesday 11th of March. I would love to see you.

Amanda Cheah
