NAIDOC Week in the Art Studio.

During art this week we have looked and discussed  artwork by First Nations artists including sculpture, paintings and fabric prints.

The year 2 children have been working on dolls based on the dolls made by Marcelle, a textile artist from Wiilmen and Ballardong Boodjar. We found out that the yarning circles were a place for the women to talk and create at the same time. They would talk to their dolls at night if they were lonely or scared  and had no one else to talk to. Marcelle  explained that, “sitting together, telling stories, passing down
stories” are an integral part of their Noongar culture. The children did a great job of creating a pattern, learning to thread and sewing material together.  Some of the  year 3/4 classes created animals featured in Dreamtime stories also with material.

The year 4 children have focussed on foreground, midground and background. We looked at landscape artwork by First Nations artist and then took inspiration and created our own.

The year 3 classes used tape with Aboriginal designs on them to create scenes from Dreamtime stories.

The Foundation and year 1 children looked at how dots were used and used sticky dots, sponges and cotton buds to create art. This included koalas, rainbow serpents, boomerangs and turtles.
