City of Holdfast Bay Mayor Visit

Students in 2.9, 2.10 and 2.11 had a special visitor in week 5, Amanda Wilson. Amanda is the City of Holdfast Bay Mayor.

Amanda is the first female Mayor for the City of Holdfast Bay and is very proud of this achievement.
She led debates with students at Brighton Primary School about the current voting age, discussing if it should be lowered to 16. The students had differing ideas. Only 5 student’s/teachers thought that it should not be lowered and remain at 18.
Amanda spoke about our council’s organic waste collection and the FOGO (Food organics, garden organics) system currently in place. The is only the first step in her vision and there are more exciting things to come.
We discussed our ideas for improvement. These included better footpaths, toilets, sport centres, parks, playgrounds and more. Did you know an Exeloo costs $250,000 to build? Wow!

Students reflected on Amanda’s presentation by creating a mind-map. Overall, Brighton Primary School would like to sincerely thank Amanda for taking time out of her busy schedule to visit us. Her presentation directly related to the Australian Curriculum, specifically Civics and Citizenship and students received valuable information.

“Aim high, set high standards, word hard and who knows what might happen…” – Amanda Wilson (City of Holdfast Bay Mayor)
