Last term the Year 4/5 classes explored infinity in Art .This is a concept that has fascinated artists, mathematicians, scientists and poets throughout human history. The students designed and made their own infinitely repeatable pattern in response to Islamic decorative design. The students built on prior knowledge of geometric shapes and demonstrated many transferrable mathematical skills. This was quite evident with the radial paper relief sculptures using natural symmetry as a provocation. This relates to an arrangement around a central point, where the pattern is consistent and repeats. Common examples would be four-leaf clovers, jellyfish, sea stars, and roses.
