Weekly Wrap Up

Dear Families,

Another great week of learning at BPS. Our staff are learners as well. The focus for this week’s Staff Meeting was to view and analyse the Maths beliefs and attributes data taken from a survey given to every child in the school. The survey questioned children about their feelings and confidence towards Maths learning and whether they felt ok to have a go and ask questions. Each year level team shared their findings to each other. What we found out as a school was that there was a balance of children who felt good about Maths “all the time” and “sometimes”.  However, when it came to ‘having a go and asking questions’, we saw a smaller pool of children. In order to respond to this issue, we may dig deeper into why children do not use questioning as a strategy. Furthermore, teachers can now use this data to create more ‘maths positive’ environments in class, where mistakes are promoted as part of the learning process, and teachers can model ways to use questioning as a learning tool.

School Photo day was held yesterday. A big thank you to Heather from our Parent and Friends Committee, and Mel from our Governing Council and Sports Committee,  who supported students and staff. Your help was much appreciated and without it, the day would have not have ran as smoothly. As communicated on the Blog , School Photos will look a little different this year due to COVID. As you would appreciate we are experiencing higher than normal absenteeism rates for both students and staff. This made taking a class photo very tricky. We made the decision to have composite photos (individual photos of each child grouped together in their class group) rather than a whole group class photo. We have  scheduled a photo catch up day for later this term with the hope to capture any students away yesterday.  This allows for students absent on the day  to have their photos taken and be included in their class composite photo.

This term has presented many challenges for all of us, as we navigate the ups and downs of COVID.  Three Way Interviews are just around the corner and we look forward to connecting with families. This will be a great opportunity to spend some quality time with your child and their teacher to discuss their learning and wellbeing. On Monday 3:00pm the Three Way Interview on line booking platform will  open via the Blog. This is where you will book your interview times. Days/times available will depend on your child’s teacher availability. Some teachers will offer interview times in Week 9, 10 and 11 of Term 1 and other teachers may offer times in Week 1 and 2 of Term 2. Our goal is to meet with all families so please talk to your child’s teacher if other arrangements need to be negotiated.

Brighton is a sporty school. The students all talk to me about their sport and the wonderful opportunities that are offered by the school. This week the students enjoyed participating in the Basketball Clinics. Next week seven students will represent Brighton at the SAPSASA Swimming carnival. We wish them well.

What’s on next week….

Monday: SAPSASA Swimming Carnival  and  Governing Council Meeting

Wednesday: Harmony Day – wear something orange or cultural dress

Have a great weekend.

Regards Rebecca
