In Week 5, the Year 7 students from our school went on our 5-day Camp/Educational tour of Sydney and Canberra. Our students were given the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy. Some of the places we went included the Sydney Opera House, Bondi Beach, the National Gallery, the Australian Institute of Sport, The Royal Australian Mint, the Electoral Education Centre, the National Library, Questacon, Parliament House, and the Australian War Memorial.
The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government is contributing funding of $60 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards these costs. The rebate is paid directly to the school upon completion of the excursion.
Next year both the Year 6 and Year 7 students will have the opportunity to attend this camp. We are hoping to have an information night (subject to COVID19 requirements) mid-late Term 2 to let families know more about this fantastic experience, to hear a student’s perspective, to find out more about the costs involved, and to pencil in our proposed dates for both groups.
Below are some of the quotes from our students:
‘Canberra is the best place for a camp – you will see so many things you never even knew existed!’ Tyson Psaila
‘The trip was absolutely stunning and I am thankful for everyone involved. The whole trip itself is an amazing and crazy memory that will stick with me forever.’ Natasha Guiver.
‘Canberra is the ideal holiday location for school camps with amazing fun activities and places to visit such as Questacon and the Australian War Memorial. There is something for everyone. Walter Burley Griffin’s design is truly magnificent and I believe every person who goes to visit Canberra will be in awe with its beauty. I was upset and disappointed when we had to leave, because our nation’s capital is like no other’. Asha Lawson
