The Holdfast Bay Council are running an excellent Recycling Art Competition for years 4-7. The winner will win a recycled bench for our school and they will also get to present their artwork at a new recycling facility to be opened very soon. Dear Holdfast Bay Primary School,
SRWRA School Recycled Art Competition 2021
We are calling out to all year 4-7 primary school classes / students in the Cities of Holdfast Bay, Marion and Onkaparinga to create artwork that illustrates the theme: Circular Economy.
Students are invited to create a piece of art, either wall art or sculpture, using any medium or combination of media as long as the work meets the requirements designated in the Competition Rules (details attached).
This competition is a collaboration between the Southern Region Waste Resource Authority (SRWRA) and the three councils to celebrate the new recycling sorting facility opening soon in Seaford Heights (where all our recycling bin contents will soon go!).
The winner will be invited to present their artwork at the launch of the new recycling sorting facility, where their artwork will also be displayed in the education centre. The winner, along with two runners-up, will also receive bench seats for their school made from recycled plastic (from the stuff dropped off at supermarkets for recycling!) valued at $550 each.
Our challenge for schools
The artwork should address this year’s theme of Circular Economy. The subject matter of the art can centre around different aspects of this theme.
It could focus on how to avoid/reduce waste through recycling, document the processing life of materials or explore new technologies involved in showcasing how, by designing out waste and pollution, keeping products and materials in use, and regenerating natural systems, we can reinvent everything.
These are just a few ideas, and should no way limit the artist into how the theme can be represented.
Competition Goals
- Give students a means to express how they feel about environmental sustainability in the world in which they live, with a focus on their local area.
- Provide students a platform to raise awareness about the environmental issues important to them and move others to take action through the creation of their work.
- Engage students in inquiry, dialogue, and critical thinking relating to waste and unwanted resources produced, and the path these materials take after use in the school or at home.
- Offer a way for students to demonstrate these learnings, in alignment with the Australian Curriculum and the STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics) approach to problem-based learning.
