Pupil Free Day – Big Ideas in Number Maths training

Wednesday’s Maths training day was an exciting, albeit exhausting day for the 75 teachers, SSOs, BSSOs and TRTs at Brighton Primary.

It was presented by Dianne Siemon, a Professor Emerita of Mathematics Education in the School of Education at RMIT University and an Adjunct Professor at The University of Notre Dame Australia. Since 1999, her major role has been in initiating, leading and managing large scale numeracy research and development projects in partnership with State and Territory Department of Education around Australia.

The ‘Big Ideas in Number’ concepts ensure students have the foundation of number sense and having a consistent approach to Mathematics. With the structure of ‘Big Ideas in Number’ at Brighton Primary, we will support common Mathematics language, as well as sequential skill development.

Teachers left keen to put into practise ideas and tasks outlined on the day, which is the beginning of a focus in numeracy, to improve student outcomes in line with our Site Improvement Plan.
