Year 6 Soil Analysis – Vermiculture STEM project

The students in 4.3, 5.1 and 5.2 have been having a close look at soil samples through the new microscopes. They have analysed soil which has been treated with natural fertiliser (Australian Vermiculture ProPel), chemical fertiliser and a control sample with no treatment. In their predictions students felt that they should see more life in the soil sample treated with natural fertiliser in comparison to that treated with the chemical fertiliser.

Using 400x magnification students examined the formation of the soil particles and identified colour variations noting that anything green in colour could be plant life.

Students recorded their observations in writing and in picture form to be able to make claims as to the health of the soil samples.
