Specialist Educators – Sally Treharne

Health & Physical Education

Sally Treharne

My name is Sally Treharne and I this is my second year with the Brighton Primary School Community. My teaching career has seen me working with the Early Years, Primary Years and with Surf Life Saving South Australia. My role in 2020 at BPS will be working as a team with Jeff Miller, Jodie Munro & Nera Brown to deliver the Health & PE curriculum. Specifically, my focus area will be in the Junior Primary. You may also see me in the LA3 classroom environment, team teaching with Rebecca Scudds on a Thursday & Friday. I have a particular interest in soccer and tennis and I am looking forward to getting to know and becoming involved in the Brighton Primary School Community.

As the JP Health and PE Teacher I will be working with a variety of classes across the school. As a part of the PE program, I will be incorporating and placing an emphasis on Play Is the Way as well as developing student’s gross motor and skill acquisition. Our learning in the Early Years will predominantly be achieved through active play and minor games. These games will hold opportunity for students to increase their physical abilities – individually, with partners, in groups and in teams.

Reception-Year 2

Students participate in regular physical activity through creative play, dance, gymnastics and minor games. They practise fundamental movement skills in a variety of sequences and situations. Students will have the opportunity to explore body movement and control, demonstrating different ways the body can move by composing and sequencing simple movement patterns. Students will develop the skills and show awareness and consideration of others during play situations.

Year 3-4

Students apply strategies for working in a cooperative and positive way. They will continue to develop movement skills in dance, gymnastics, games and sports, and practise manipulative skills in a range of minor games. Students will work towards refining fundamental movement skills and demonstrate static balance, sprint run, vertical jump, catch, hop, side gallop, skip and overarm throw through practice and application in different games and sports. They will have opportunity to participate in physical activity and investigate how it contributes to a healthy and active lifestyle.

Term 1 Health will see students exploring their identity and individuality, learning to recognise and manage emotions, making healthy and safe choices, and how the body changes. These areas offer opportunity to investigate and discuss new ideas and concepts. Students will learn to describe the components of an active lifestyle and identify different ways to be active at school and at home. The Keeping Safe: Child Protection Curriculum will be included in our Health program this year. Two major themes will be emphasised, these being: We all have the right to be safe and we can help ourselves to be safe by talking to people we trust.
